I've had a couple mic100's for a few of years and thought them to be a great lowbudget preamp for my homestudio. No, it's not as ggod as a top end tube preamp but then again it's cheap, but for the amount of money you pay for it, it's good. Used at moderate settings there is no noise problems or what so ever. The tube can be swapped out for another and there are many reports that the sound is better if you do swap the tube, be sure if you try this to use a tube that is an equivelant. The unit was a bit harsh when I first hooked it up, but burning it in for a couple days took care of a lot of it. , but it does better than I thought it would. I've been using the MIC-100 in front of my Rhodes NT-2a (which is a bit toppy read my review on it) and it puts back some of the warmth that I like in vocals. The Limiter isn't very good, so I use a seperate compressor.
I have used the MIC100 with an electric lead one side and a computer DAW on the other and it worked fine. It loses some bite when the settings are too high. I keep the gain way down and volume around halfway. The sound alteration isnt strong which is good. It is great for digital recording because it really gives the sound a warm analogue feeling before going into your digital processing chain.
