Here you will find examples of work I have recorded at home and the equipment used

All of these tracks were recorded with what I would call basic setups. I have also recorded other tracks using more upmarket equipment but to tell you the truth by the time the tracks are rendered down to 44K 16bit it is very hard to tell the difference. So hopefully these tracks will prove that you don't need £50K worth of rack gear or software to produce a good sounding track. What you need is to learn to listen and take your time.

Hardware

An HP XW6000 workstation which was bought for the sole purpose of recording and producing music. It is a dual Xeon 2.8 system with 2Gig of ram. If I remember I paid £79 for the system and £60 for the ram I then added a couple of hard drives which brought the total to £230 for the system. The sound capture was done using a Marian Marc Midi 8 card which was bought on Ebay for £75. This is and 8 in, 8 out card and can be used with the Marian Marc A card (which I also have) to connect and ADAT to your system for an additional 8 ins and outs. I will let you judge the quality of the recording for yourself. Although I have many outboard effects I find that I no longer need them when using Sonar and suitable effects plugins (many of which are free).

Mixing Desk and other outboard hardware

The mixing desk I used was a Behringer (I also have a Yamaha RM 800, beautiful desk to use but over the top for use with a PC based hard disc recording system). I only use this desk now for audio capture as it desk is capable of 16 channel output via 8 busses and 8 direct outputs. All my mixing is fully completed within the PC system (which has the advantage of full automation).

Microphones

Rhodes NT2-A, Se Mc1,

Software

The Daw that I use is Cakewalk Studio, I have used cakewalk for many years and although I have tested many other DAW's I still prefer Cakewalk Sonar (here is a good link to a video on Youtube by Terry Howard who explains better than I can why he uses Cakewalk Sonar). I Often use Sony Sound forge for the final polish on the tracks prior to burning to CD.

All promtional videos were created my Lisa Hounsell who you can find on Youtube here as Hawkeye Creations

All the Track Below were sung by Lynn & Lisa Hounsell Hounsell, a variety of backings were used some live, some pre-recorded.

Fields of Gold - Eve Cassidy Version. This was recorded using Sonar as the main DAW and the final mastering was completed for the audio with Sony Soundforge 8. The video was then created by my daughter who is studying video production and if you are interested you can find her on youtube here . The mike used for the main vocal recording was a Rhodes NT2a (the one in the video was only for the effect and was not used for sound capture).

Desperado by the Eagles. This track was produced on Sonar after the sound capture for the instruments was done using a variety of inputs, an ADAT was used to capture the Bluthner Grand piano which was played by Fred O'Neil (vocal coach to Susan Boyle and also Lynn Hounsell), the piano was miked up using a Rhodes Nt2a and the Se Mc1. The String sections were captured by a Fostex R8 portable Multitrack and a Rhodes Nt2a, this was used to keep the full sound of the string section which we wanted faintly in the background.

This track was recorded using Pro-tools on a Mac by my daughter. The Mic used for the vocal recording was an SE Mc1 and the backing was a backing track which was EQ'd and re-compressed within Pro Tools.
